Celebrating the Strength Behind the Uniform

Nominations are now being accepted for the First Annual Celebrating the Strength Behind the Uniform Award. Exceptional women in the Petawawa to Pembroke area, impacted by the Garrison Petawawa military lifestyle, are eligible to be nominated.

The Petawawa Military Family Resource Centre (PMFRC) event will acknowledge 100 women for their courage, dedication and commitment to their military community. Each woman will be presented with a pin of recognition, symbolizing everything they do in support of the military.

“We recognize the challenges military families face extend beyond the soldier. Many of the woman we hope to see nominated balance family-life, military-life and their careers – all while supporting other families and giving back to their communities. These women are the backbone of our troops,” said Holly Cardiff, integration and support programmer, PMFRC.

Celebrating the Strength Behind the Uniform will acknowledge the unique nature of the military community, the women who  have made commitments to soldiers, yet have no reassurance or guarantee  their loved ones will remain safe.

Nominees can be the mother, wife/partner, sister, or daughter of a military member attached to Garrison Petawawa, who has shown strength and courage in challenging times. Online nominations must be submitted no later than February 27, 2015.

“The PMFRC Strength Behind the Uniform committee will review and judge the submitted nominations. Following a set criteria the 100 nominees will then be chosen to receive recognition. Nominees must be females 16 years of age or older, and must have contributed positively to the military community,” explained Cardiff.

The March 26, 2015, invitation-only event will give the PMFRC the opportunity to recognize women who are the often unrecognized, strength behind the uniform. The committee is hoping MFRCs across the country will choose to implement a similar recognition event at their locations. According to Cardiff, the PMFRC staff are always searching for ways to show appreciation to military families through events such as Celebrating the Strength Behind the Uniform.

Initially, Mr. Dave Fisher, of the Pembroke Petawawa District Community Foundation contacted the PMFRC, extending the opportunity to take part in creating this women’s recognition initiative through the 100 Women Campaign, established by 100 women in the region who each donated $100 to set up the fund.

The PMFRC staff wrote a proposal explaining their vision and were awarded the dollars to support their event, the First Annual Celebrating the Strength Behind the Uniform Award. Without the generous donation from the Pembroke Petawawa District Community Foundation, the PMFRC would not have been able to create the event.
