Edmonton based soldiers deploy to Latvia

A group of soldiers from 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (1 CMBG) arrived in Latvia last weekend to support the ongoing Op REASSURANCE.

The 540 soldiers will lead the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Camp Adazi.

“Over the next six months of their deployment, they will train with soldiers from the eight other NATO allies who make up this multinational unit to form a cohesive combat team,” says Chief Public Affairs, Task Force Latvia Headquarters Major Mark A. Peebles (OF-3). “Together with their Latvian allies, they will work to deter any potential foreign aggression and defend Latvia if necessary.”

Op REASSURANCE has been active since 2014.

The CAF offers their military support to reinforce NATO’s collective defence and demonstrate the strength of allied solidarity.

During this operation, the CAF continues to conduct training, exercises, and some NATO-specific tasks.

Currently, members of Land, Maritime, and Air capabIlities will be deployed over the next four years until March 2023.
