Canada Army Run Receives Award

Organizers of the Canada Army Run were honoured to accept the 2014 Community Spirit Award at this year’s 2015 Ottawa Tourism Awards ceremony.

The Community Spirit Award is given in recognition of a business or organization in the tourism industry that organized, or participated in, a fundraising effort or community service activity that supported a charitable or not-for-profit organization in the National Capital Region.

“It is always inspiring to see the impact that an organization can have on our community. Our tourism partners are very involved in this respect and go above and beyond their mandates,” said Noel Buckley, president and CEO, Ottawa Tourism.

The Ottawa Tourism Awards are held to celebrate the individuals, organizations and events that have set high standards and demonstrated outstanding achievement, contributing to the growth and development of tourism.

Buckley told those attending the ceremony that Ottawa Tourism feels it’s important to showcase member’s work supporting charitable causes.

“Their admirable actions transcend tourism and truly make a difference in our community and beyond,” said Buckley.

The award served to highlight the important role each participant and spectator plays in contributing to the community spirit of Canada Army Run, making the event unlike any other run in the country.

Proceeds and fundraising efforts from Canada Army Run support Soldier On and the Military Families Fund. These organizations provide support to ill and injured soldiers on their road to recovery, and to military families who face unforeseen and often immediate needs as a result of conditions of service.

Since 2008, Canada Army Run has raised more than $1.2 million for the two charitable organizations.

“I am extremely proud of this event. The phenomenal support shown by Canadians for their Army is surpassed only by our gratitude to them for their support, and I would like to thank Ottawa Tourism for this recognition. I look forward to once again welcoming participants and supporters alike this September as we celebrate the wonderful community for which Canada Army Run is known,” said Lieutenant-General Marquis Hainse, commander, Canadian Army.

Canada Army Run, presented by BMO Bank of Montreal is one of the fastest growing runs in the country, the number of participants has more than tripled, from 7,000 in the inaugural run in 2008 to more than 27,000 in 2014.

Canada Army Run participants can walk, run, or roll in 5K and half marathon distances; in addition to participants, tens of thousands line the streets to cheer on those running, walking, or rolling.

Canada Army Run takes participants past many notable and scenic sites in Canada’s Capital. Last year the event drew approximately 10,000 participants from outside the region. This year’s Canada Army Run will be held on Sunday, 20 September, 2015.
