Participate in June is Recreation Month activities to Win $1,000 Canadian Tire gift card

To encourage members of the military community to take advantage of local recreational activities and facilities, Personnel Support Programs (PSP) has designated this month as June is Recreation Month.

“This spring, celebrate June is Recreation Month by adding more recreational activities to your routine. Whichever activities you choose, your recreation adventure will leave you feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready to tackle whatever tomorrow may bring,” said Ryan Cane, Senior Manager Recreation Programs, PSP, CFMWS.

June is Recreation Month is focused on increasing awareness about recreation and leisure facilities, programs and services that add to military life and the operational support of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) community.

This year’s theme, “Why Play Anywhere Else?” highlights the role PSP has in providing recreational services to the military community.

PSP’s more than 200 facilities nationwide are visited 5,250,440 times annually. This means that PSP gyms are used on average 1,200 hours a week, more than 550 hours a week in the pool and over 200 hours a week in the arena.

Last year alone, there were more than 7,810 instructor-led programs for the CAF community to register in, representing over 260 different areas of interest.

“While ‘R&R’ may seem like fun and games, physical activity and social connections that we build in organized recreation activities actually help us minimize stress and protect our mental health. Making recreation, leisure and sport opportunities more available to more people more often has the potential to make a significant difference to the health and well-being of the CAF members, families and CAF communities,” added Cane.

Bases and wings across the country will be taking part in a variety of activities this June to promote the health and wellbeing of their community members as well as providing safe and enjoyable recreation activities. The 54 activities planned for June is Recreation Month include special events and programs at the local level, prizes, and incentives to sign up for summer programs. It is estimated close to 31,879 will participate in this year’s events.

This year’s June is Recreation Month is sponsored by Canadian Tire. Canadian Tire is providing recreation departments of wings and bases across Canada with $60,000 in gift cards to purchase resources and equipment to support and enhance their community recreation programs.

Additionally, Canadian Tire is conducting its third consecutive base tour and will be visiting CFB Wainwright, CFB Cold Lake, CFB Moose Jaw and CFB Shilo to make a donation of gift cards and sporting equipment and host a Jumpstart Games for kids in the community.

PSP is also running a June is Recreation Month Contest. Participants can enter to win one of three $1,000 Canadian Tire gift cards.

The contest runs from June 1 to July 1. You must have a CF1 Card to be eligible to win.
