David Johnston to Continue as Governor General

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced on March 17 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, has welcomed the continuance in office of His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston as Governor General until September 2017.

His Excellency has accepted the Prime Minister’s invitation to remain in office for this extended term, which will cover many of the events celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation.

“His Excellency David Johnston has been an exceptional Governor General and Commander-in-Chief, working tirelessly to advance the interests of Canadians and to promote a greater understanding of our great country, both at home and abroad. He has made remarkable contributions to Canada in his role as the Queen’s representative in Canada, performing his duties with dignity, wisdom and aplomb. I look forward to him continuing his fine work in this critical role,” said Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

During his time as Governor General, David Johnston has been an energetic promoter of a smart and caring nation, with a focus on innovation, education, volunteerism, philanthropy and active living, which was part of his call to service in his installation speech.

He has also been a tremendous ambassador for Canada both on his official travels to South America, Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States, as well as here at home, including hosting four Royal Tours.

He and his wife, Sharon Johnston, have regularly opened their home and the grounds at Rideau Hall to Canadians by hosting concerts, movie nights and skating parties on the rink located at the official residence.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is Queen of Canada and Canada’s Head of State. The Governor General is the Queen’s representative at the federal level in Canada. The Governor General is also the Commander-in-Chief of Canada.

The Governor General is appointed by the Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister. Tenure is “at pleasure” and usually lasts five years, but the term may be extended.

Governor General David Johnston has served as Canada’s 28th Governor General since October 1, 2010. His Excellency has played an important role in his official functions, teaching Canadians and others about the vital constitutional role of the Crown in Canada.

Mr. Johnston was selected as Governor General of Canada following extensive national consultations by an expert advisory committee. Prior to becoming Governor General, Mr. Johnston was a respected lawyer, academic, and university administrator.
