Laura KellerIf you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know I have a thing about Christmas. And when I say a thing, I mean a slight obsession. Always have. In fact, we put up 3 Christmas trees in our house, and still have decorations left over. My long-suffering husband has learned to let me have this madness … and I never complain about watching hockey. It works for us.
This is a huge problem every time we move. It’s a problem for the movers who look at me like I’m more than a little bent when they are moving the eleventh plastic tote labelled “Christmas Decorations”. It’s a problem when it comes to storing all of my treasures … well, for obvious reasons. And it’s always a problem the first year we live somewhere, trying to figure out where to put everything.
Now, I realize that there are people in the world suffering in horrific ways, and if this is my worst problem in life, I need to count my lucky stars. But why can’t the world just agree on one ceiling height? We had all sorts of dramas with our 8 ft. tree in our 8 ft. family room … the “perfect” spot for the tree was where the ceiling dipped down to 7.5 feet … crumb! So, after much rearranging of furniture, we found a new “perfect” spot, only to realize there was no plug nearby! Mr. Long-Suffering fished out an extension cord and solved the problem, only to be faced with it once again in another room.
And would it be asking too much if all fireplace mantles could come in one standard size? It was tricky getting the nutcracker collection looking nice … missed my mantle from last year! And why don’t they just put Christmas light hooks on the every house when they build them? My husband has had to install light hooks on 5 houses – I didn’t have the heart to ask him to do it again … we’ll wait for next year.
We convinced our youngest that Santa will indeed find her. Only to have her bubble burst by a very naughty boy at school. There were tears. But, it’s all sorted now, she’s fine and the house is looking very festive. It’s exciting spending the Christmas season in a new place … enjoying all of the things this community has to offer. Make sure you take the time to enjoy the festivities where you are!
