Veteran’s food bank assists veterans and families

The Veterans Association Food Bank (VAFB) in Edmonton opened in November of 2020 as an extension of Calgary’s VAFB that was established in 2018.

A not-for-profit society, VAFB is designed to relieve poverty by providing food and fundamental needs for veterans and their families.

“After being cut off benefits, I found myself in a very bad place with no food or money. I was at the end of my rope, but then I reached out to the VAFB. I explained my situation, and within hours, my rent and all bills were paid, and I had food,” wrote Todd, (retired) 1 PPCLI B Coy 5 Platoon in his testimonial.

Taking Strides for Veterans

VAFB recognizes anyone currently serving or has served in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). In addition, their website explains that any currently serving, honourably discharged, or honourably released Commonwealth Allies, members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Peacekeepers, Merchant Marines, or Ferry Command (Coast Guard) can access support and services. The service also applies to spouses, widows, widowers, and any dependent children in need. Proof of military service or affiliation is required.

The organization is taking strides towards promoting a stable environment for veterans affected by loneliness, isolation, addiction, mental health, or other health-related issues, with peer support programs and social activities. They host several programs, from food hampers and peer support to disability tax forms and assistance with Veterans Affairs Canada claims. The list of programs and details can be found here.
